Alleged Gang Member Sentenced ... How is Novato Doing vs. Gangs?

Armando Gil, a suspect in the Hamilton Marketplace shooting from January 2011, was sentenced Friday on unrelated charges.

The sentencing of a suspected gang member Friday prompts a couple of questions to Novato residents: Is the town's gang problem bigger or smaller than other surrounding cities? How worried are you about gang violence? Has law enforcement made significant progress and successfully sent the message to gangs that Novato about its zero-tolerance stance?

The gang member sentencing Friday had little to do with gang violence, but it did put a man behind bars who was key suspect Novato shooting last year. , 27, a suspect in a pending attempted murder trial, was sentenced on an unrelated counts of having sex with a minor and making criminal threats, according to a story in the .

More than 18 months after two men were shot outside the , alleged gang member Gil still awaits his trial on attempted murder. and survived in the Jan. 3, 2011, incident, believed to be gang-related, and Gil was in Rohnert Park.

Gil was found to have seven previous counts against him. Friday he was sentenced to three years and eight months in jail for having sex with a 15-year-old Novato girl and threatening the mother of his child, the Marin IJ reported.

Gil is a US citizen, I assume. Our schools are a good place to start addressing the gang problem early.

Anchor baby. Or illegal alien. There, I said it.
Bob May 19, 2012 at 03:47 PM
In a previous article it stated that ICE deported Gill and he returned to do his dirty work.
Jerome J Ghigliotti Jr May 19, 2012 at 08:23 PM
Yes, Gil is an illegal alien. He was previously deported after a felony violent crime arrest was reduced to a misdemeanor. He is the beneficiary of the borderless US. I have been screaming about illegal alien crime in Novato for 3 1/2 years, and yet 71% of voters did not even mail a ballot. And why have only 3 people commented on this article.
Lloyd May 19, 2012 at 09:04 PM
What would you have everyone say? Is crime a problem? YES is the issue of unregulated borders a problem? YES Are all illegals criminals NO Arizona is trying to attack the problem with no support from the federal government. This is a national issue not a local one. When we throw out all the bums that call themselves the Congress of the US maybe then we have a chance at some real progress. The system is broken and those responsible for managing it are the most corrupt, bought and paid for. So what would you have us do?
Jerome J Ghigliotti Jr May 19, 2012 at 11:36 PM
NPD has one officer who is very knowledgeable and works very hard at gang recognition. The problem is that the chief and the city council invite illegal aliens to live, work, and perpetrate in Novato because the chief and council are social engineers, and believe in enforced racial quotas. THAT is racism. The US Suprme Court had oral argument on Arizona's SB 1070, and even the leftist judges commented that the US (which was joined by the Mexican government) did not present much of a case. The Obama administration has just sued Sheriff Joe Arpiao alleging racial profiling. When someone walks across the US/Mexican border is he supposed to only question Caucasians to satisfy some quota system. Perpetrators are perpetrators, no matter what shade. Suppose that men form Potsylvania are disproportionately arrested for drunk driving. Does that mean that only non-Potsylvanians can be arrested for drunk driving after their quota is reached. And who the hockey sticks would come across the Mexican border? Disproportionately hispanics. Does that mean that Sheriff Joe cannot arrest any more hispanic illegal border crossers for the rest of the year, and only arrest Potsylvanians? The Obama administration is challenging Arizona and working on concert with the Mexican government. Who elected him? States have a right to protect their own borders even if the federal government does not protect its border.
Jerome J Ghigliotti Jr May 19, 2012 at 11:41 PM
Yes, all illegal aliens are criminals. They have illegally crossed the US border. No, they are not all violent felons, but they are criminals. I know many, many people born in foreign countries, including Mexico, who entered the US legally and have become good American citizens. You do not start out doing something illegal and expect not to do anything illegal after that. Recidivism is the tendency of someone who has broken the law once to do so again and again. THAT is human nature.

YES Jerome the good people of Novato have spoken LOUD and CLEAR!!
Jerome J Ghigliotti Jr May 20, 2012 at 03:34 AM
NO, Renee, the people of Novato have NOT spoken. They are in a state of catatonic apathy. Since Greek philosophers, apathy has been identified as the most serious offense against democracy. Not voting is not "speaking".
Don Reihl May 20, 2012 at 03:46 AM
I would have everyone be aware that congress is purposely ruining America. Is anyone aware of the One world Order? We are so close to becoming a One World Governent and 90% of the people have no ideal partly because of mass media conditioning and partly ignorance! Our government is corrupt in the most evil way. The federal reserve is our enemy and the 1% of the elite rich is running our govenrment holding the puppet strings of many past presidents and current President Obama. God Bless America.
Don Reihl May 20, 2012 at 03:54 AM
Our government is not what we think it is. in 2006 then President Bush signed an open border agreement with Canada and Mexico and no one even knows about it. No media attention because the media only tells you what THEY want you to know. It's called conditioning. North America will soon become North American Union. Don't believe me...Look it up.

We do have a gang problem. We have gang members living at The Leafwood Apartments (some of these apartments are owned by Novato residents), Windover and Bayvista. Landlords have allowed this. Gil only received 3 years. That is nothing for a shooting. Gangs are in our Novato Public Schools and I don't think our School Board is being tough enough. Our City Council and Mike Frank are not doing anything either. They sit on their hands and play "make nice" with developers and don't help the people they are suppose to represent.
Jerome J Ghigliotti Jr May 20, 2012 at 04:48 AM
Please allow me to clarify. Yes, 3 years is too short a time, but the sentence was on a charge related to sex with a minor. The attempted murders have not come to trial. You might ask why not? I do. What is DA Berberian waiting for a year and a half later? Is Berberian waiting until we forget with the hope of reducing the attmpted murders to a misdemeanor, so that Gil can be sentenced to time served, deported and be back on Novato streets a week later? Just like last time. But don't ask me about Berberian. No the school boards are not doing enough about gang crime, because gang crime is associated with illegal aliens, and the political correctness performed by the school boards and city council and chief have established a practice that if you actually hold illegal aliens responsible for their crimes you are branded as a racist. The council and frank sit on their hands because the voters won't get up off their donkeys. Oops.
Renee May 20, 2012 at 04:52 AM
Yes Jerome, you had your chance to prove all of your rhetoric to the Voters of Novato and they said NO to YOU!!
carmen h. May 20, 2012 at 04:56 AM
STOP THE GANGS! Get a new council and new city manager!
Jerome J Ghigliotti Jr May 20, 2012 at 05:02 AM
I understand your lack of comprehension of the English language. It is easy for a person of your accumen to mistake not voting as actually speaking or acting, rather than the more closely defined "apathy". Google that.
Jerome J Ghigliotti Jr May 20, 2012 at 05:03 AM
Carmen, I nominate you and I will assist you on your election committee.
Renee May 20, 2012 at 05:17 AM
Jerome, Your lack of comprehension on many levels is quite amusing I forget how hilarious and entertaining you can be! YOU GO JEROME!! LOL
Jerome J Ghigliotti Jr May 20, 2012 at 05:44 AM
Renee, thank you. Now please get all of your friends to read Novato Patch and contribute.
Jerome J Ghigliotti Jr May 20, 2012 at 05:53 PM
I have been censored for telling the truth. I am re-submitting my response to this in a politically correct manner. The city council does have control over who moves to Novato. When Bay Vista/Hamilton low income housing could not be filled from Marin, the council advertised to and accepted tenants from the East Bay, according to then Mayor MacLeamy's public statement.
Roberta May 22, 2012 at 05:21 AM
"Mr. Grimes" I am surprised you think The Novato CIty Council is doing a good job. What specifically are they doing that you like? The $50,000 new signage for downtown that a talented student at Novato High could have done for free? Yes, there will be candidates running against them in the next election as the current council has not met a developer they didn't like.

I posted on this before. Im an ex gang member. Joined at 12 & actively banged till 32. Served almost 13 1/2 yrs from youth authority to county to prison. Landed in Pelican Bay SHU for my last 3yrs. I been home for 10yrs, no violations, got a job, got married, we have 3 kids & im a Christian who on my own goes around to bus stops, malls & church events trying to change the hearts & minds of kids to not follow the in crowd & dare to accept something more meaningfull & fullfilling, our Lord Jesus Christ. Illegal or not, black, white, asian ect..Crime is a problem. Passing laws for more time wont stop the problem. They only come out more educated & determined to do more crime. The problem is the heart of man. Aimless, mislead, lack of selfesteem, no goals in life ect..kids just follow trends & those trends come from the media, music video & even family members who are lost themselves. Want kids & young adults to turn from crime & gangs, then give them something to turn too & send someone with a defferent msg who comes from where they come from & looks like they look only instead of poison being fed, i'll feed em the truth! Gangs are cults ppl. They change your morals, your beliefs & instill gang rules, gang propaganda & steel kids from their families. Believe it or not gangs are cults! I know because i spent almost 20 yrs in one 13 of it incarserated. Only by Gods Grace did i wake up & realize this. www.facebook.com/heir2thathrown if you want start getting Novato clean.

Keep in mind marin gang members who have been in prison will be getting out soon. Think its bad now, wait till they come home. They will be recruiting & educating young recruites to commit murder, weapontry & warfare tactics, how to manufacture weapons, establish turff, run drug trades, recruit girls to prostitute..if we get to these kids 1st they wont be tempted by these older gang members for they will be standing firm on a faith based foundation found only in Christ. Do nothing & within 5yrs marin will be just santa rosa or san jose. Nows the time to act. Yes theres gangs here but it can be thwarted, once these older guys come home its going to get bad, mark my words. If your serious, use me & the ministry im part of. We're all ex gang members who hit the streets ministering the salvation of Christ. Love wins, every time!
