Woman, 81, Struck by Van in San Rafael Dies of Her Injuries

Police believe the elderly woman either fell or stepped in front of a van belonging to a Novato-based home repair company.

By Bay City News Service:

A Larkspur woman was struck by a van in San Rafael on Tuesday afternoon and died several hours later at a hospital, a police spokeswoman said Thursday.

The Marin County coroner's office identified the woman as 81-year-old Beatrice Sanchez.

San Rafael police spokeswoman Margo Rohrbacher said Sanchez was standing on the southwest corner of the intersection of Third and Irwin streets at about 4:15 p.m. Tuesday when she was struck by a cargo van belonging to Home Doctors Inc.

The van driver, a 60-year-old Novato man, turned left onto Third Street from the left turn lane on northbound Irwin Street, Rohrbacher said.

The man said he felt something hit the van and stopped at the scene.

Sanchez either fell in front of the van or stepped in front of it, Rohrbacher said.

Witnesses at the stoplight gave Sanchez first aid and she was taken to Marin General Hospital, where she died around 10 p.m. Tuesday, according to Rohrbacher.

Chris Bulmer, a spokesman for Home Doctors Inc., a home repair and remodeling company in Novato, said the incident was "a very unfortunate accident" and would not comment further.

The Marin County coroner's office is investigating the death and San Rafael police are asking any witnesses to call (415) 485-3000.
