UPDATE: Speeding Driver Seen Veering Across Freeway and Ramp Before Fatal Crash

CHP get to reopen highway ramp several hours after fatal accident.

A speeding Honda veered across four lanes of traffic on northbound U.S. Highway 101 and a connector ramp this evening before it crashed and overturned, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The silver Honda sedan burst into flames after the 6:43 p.m. crash at the eastbound state Highway 37 connector ramp, and CHP officers arriving on the scene were unable to put out the fire or rescue the driver, CHP Officer Andrew Barclay said.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and the age and gender have not yet been determined due to damage from the fire, Barclay said. Witnesses reported seeing the car driving at a high speed just before the crash, but the reasons for its sudden lurch across traffic remain under investigation.

The Honda struck a concrete bridge support column but did not cause damage to the bridge. The car, however, suffered major front driver side damage. Both lanes of the connector ramp were closed until around 9 p.m. due to the investigation, Barclay said.
