This Week Dedicated to Promote Safe Driving by Teens

National campaign emphasizes that help is out there for make driving safe for new drivers.

The leading cause of death among American teens? Traffic collisions.

Sunday marked the beginning of the 5th annual National Teen Driver Safety Week, an effort to publicize the fact that teens are involved in three times as many fatal crashes as other drivers.

Novato has suffered the loss of several teens in recent years — some in alcohol-related incidents and others due to unsafe driving.

Congress established this promotional week in 2007 to raise awareness to teen driver safety issues and encourage safe teen driver passenger behavior," according to the California Highway Patrol. It is observed during the third week of October.

The CHP offers Start Smart driving courses for teens, which can be eye-opening for young drivers. Call the Marin CHP headquarters in Corte Madera at 924-1100 to learn more about local courses.
