I work in Berkeley so I follow Berkeley Patch as well as Novato and other Marin towns. It is laughable how unserious the Novato crimes are, and how different from the East Bay. We had no armed - or even strong-arm - thefts of cell phones from walkers at night, no bicycles stolen from dorms, no 400 pound marijuana hauls, no babies delvered at gas stations, no prostitution stings, and this is all in one week! Marin kids think 911 is for finking on their moms, not protecting life and limb... and Moms lock their kids outside for some petty disagreement rather than understanding human communication. Sheesh!
Marin must be boring to some, comforting to others. I wish we had fewer drunks and stupid people in public, though.

Oh, and threatening to stab your wife for eating your sandwich? How do officers spend their time back at the station, laughing or crying?
Brent Ainsworth (Editor) November 13, 2012 at 01:34 pm
I hear you, Lou, but I'm not sure Novato residents or police officers take any sort of threat as a joke. Believe me, I could report on domestic violence 24-7 — just turn on the police scanner to have an eye-opening experience about often it happens. I think your point is that Novato is a pretty safe city compared to so many other cities, and lots of folks here are mighty proud of that.

Its a great feeling knowing that I feel completely safe (well almost) walking around Novato at night :)

If someone acts like a crook, they deserve to be treated like a crook. If someone expects to get $20,000 worth of gold for $4,000; did they think that they were getting a bargain because it was stolen property? Why else would anyone sell $20,000 worth of gold for $4,000?

Thanks Brent. I wasn't belittling the threat, that is serious, but the reason given is so ridiculous as to be laughable - certainly that person has a lot of messed up stuff going on, maybe lost a house and a job and despondent for any number of reasons, but for eating a sandwich? A ridiculous excuse! In the Berkeley examples, the guys with the guns are looking for survival, not to hurt anyone. Fortunately that is less of a problem in Marin. Except when they steal out cars hat ae recoverd in Richmond!
I think the county is far more of a factor than the town. I wish Patch was for Marin and not balkanized into what, ten different locations? I read as many of them as I can and wish there awere a Marin County Patch.

Susan thank you for posting this. Chris Pareja is an articulate speaker whose message needs to beRead More acknowledged. While community activists claim Plan Bay Area is the answer Chris uses their own statistics to point out how little is accomplished and the real hypocrisy behind advocates claims that it will provide "equity". Chris attended the Plan Bay Area Debate at the Civic Center and spoke there as well. Kinsey completely ignored his comments and kept repeating the party line: Plan Bay Area is the only answer we have so it is "good enough." Anyone who hasn't yet should take the time to watch the debate as it is a real eye opener. Kinsey's responses are quite disconcerting if he is being touted as the local expert on Plan Bay Area. I was shocked by how little he seems to understand. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOE7Hyd5B40&feature=youtu.be

Which is a fair assumption since my name and face are on it for now. Sorry for the confusion. In theRead More interim, I am more than happy to answer questions or address any concerns about the new design or our coverage of the community.
Tina McMillan June 17, 2013 at 01:03 pm
Jim What is the best way to reach you with questions and offers of help? If there is a way toRead More personalize each Patch to its community that would make a huge difference. Brent would post news articles as the primary focus. The comparison to a "penny saver" is the biggest problem with the new design. It does not favor news which is what many people are interested in. If San Rafael Patch is hosting the Plan Bay Area articles then doesn't it make sense to cross post them to Novato's front page too? Looking for news was never a problem with the old Patch, now finding the news in the middle of the garage sales, ads for businesses and announcements is where many people are stuck. It's unfortunate that Back Bay is the old design. It means corporate is throwing out what was the best of Patch. Is there anyone to write to, to suggest that the changes in format are not supportive of a online news source?
