Suspected Grenades Turn Out to be Fishing Gear

The following information from Jan. 13-14 was supplied by the Novato Police Department. Arrests do not indicate a conviction.

The Headliner:

5:49 p.m., Jan. 13 – An employee of the recycling center in the 7500 block of Redwood Boulevard reported finding a box with suspected grenades inside it.  Responding officers discovered the objects were fishing weights that resembled grenades and placed them into police property for destruction to prevent another misidentification.

8:03 a.m. – An employee of Toast restaurant on Nave Drive was arrested for alleged brandishing knives and threatening other staff in the Kitchen.

8:15 a.m. – Food and money were found near the rear steps of the South Novato Animal Hospital building on the 1700 block of Novato Boulevard. The items were turned in to the police as found property.

11:34 a.m. – A woman on the 1500 block of Hill Road found a license plate in her yard and turned it over to police.  It had been removed from a recovered stolen vehicle.

3:34 p.m. – A 14-year-old boy was detained for shoplifting at the Lucky supermarket on Grant Avenue.  Lucky declined to press charges, opting to handle the matter in-house via a program from the District Attorney’s office.

5:06 p.m. – A woman was attacked by her daughter in the 1500 block of Novato Boulevard after an argument over a book.  The two separated, and the mom requested that the police speak with her daughter.  The responding officers found a note upon arrival that the parties had gone to a community mental health facility. 

5:41p.m. – A woman anonymously reported an ongoing issue of controlled substance use inside the Viking lounge.  The Novato Response Team was advised, as well as the Marin County Major Crimes Task Force.

Jan. 14

9:25 a.m. – A checkbook and more than $500 in tools were reported stolen from a locked vehicle sometime overnight on the 700 Block of Rowland Avenue.

11:28 a.m. – A burglary occurring sometime between 5:30 p.m. the previous day and 5 a.m. this morning was reported on the 2200 block of Center Road.  Jewelry and a dog were missing, and it is unknown how entry was gained into the residence.

12:06 p.m. – The front door of Mike’s Liquor on the 1100 block of Grant Avenue was reportedly tagged by markers and spray paint, causing an estimated $300 in damage. 

1:11 p.m. – Two cars collided at Diablo Avenue and Novato Boulevard, causing minor injury to a woman in a Honda.  She was transported to Kaiser hospital in Terra Linda.

5:25 p.m. – Juveniles on Quince Court were reported throwing fireworks from a backyard at vehicles passing by.  Officers responded, advised the youths, and an arrest was made for a restraining order violation. 

7:19 p.m. – A woman was detained for attempted shoplifting of more than $500 at the Target store in the Vintage Oaks Shopping Center.

9:37 p.m. – A woman tried to use a counterfeit $100 bill at the Safeway store on Nave Drive.  The woman left the store when advised that the police would need to be contacted about the fraudulent bill.
