Residents Use Garden Hose to Extinguish Kitchen Fire

Stovetop fire on Merritt Drive spread within the kitchen before the house's occupants doused the small blaze.

Several fire units responded to a kitchen fire Sunday morning on Merritt Drive in Novato, but the house occupants had already doused the small blaze before the firefighters arrived on the scene, a fire official said.

The stovetop fire, reported at 9:46 a.m., spread to some cabinets and the ceiling inside 1647 Merritt Drive, according to Novato Fire District Captain Erich Mesenburg.

“The occupants were able to grab a garden hose and get most of it extinguished before we got there,” Mesenburg said.

Fire crews opened up the walls and ceiling in the residence, and checked the adjacent home, to make sure the fire hadn’t spread, he said.

As of Sunday afternoon, officials didn’t know fire’s estimated amount of damage and the cause of the fire was still under investigation.
