Red Flag Warning Issued For Today

Caution is urged today in Novato as the National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning. These extremely dry conditions have never been experienced before.

Today is a Red Flag Warning day. The warning is issued by the National Weather Service when winds and fuel conditions (dry grass and brush) are extremely dry.

Currently the warning is for ridge tops over 1,000 feet. However, everyone is being asked to be aware of the very dry conditions.

Novato Fire Protection District Chief Mark urges caution. He says this is an unprecedented condition. “We haven't experienced anything like this going back 100 years in records like we are experiencing now,” Heine said.

Extreme caution should be exercised during red flag warnings. Those using machinery such as weed trimmers around dry grasses and brush should only operate them in the early mornings.

Chief Heine says people should check the Spare The Air website before using fireplaces and fire pits.

“I want people to recognize we're in unprecedented weather conditions now. Everything is very dry and susceptible,” Heine said

Rem: I understand. We had many days where people could not use their woodstoves and very cold weather. It is easy to sign up on the website. They send you a notice each day about the next day's conditions. Not all woodstoves burn the same. There are many that meet and exceed the EPA guidelines. Many people use them to offset the rising costs associate with their energy bills.
