Police Nab Pair for Alleged Car Burglary

Suspected gang members were seen breaking into a mini-van in downtown Novato Friday afternoon, police said.

Two suspected gang members allegedly were spotted breaking into a mini-van in downtown Novato Friday afternoon and were arrested minutes later by police one block away.

were called to the scene at around 5 p.m. when a witness reported seeing two men breaking into a Volkswagen Routan mini-van at Fourth Street and Grant Avenue, Sgt. Jim Tross said. The men allegedly fled the scene toward Third Street but an officer was on patrol nearby and nabbed the alleged burglars, Tross said.

Police arrested 28-year-old Luis Antonio Toledo and 30-year-old Gabriel Calderon, both residents of Novato, on suspicion of burglary and participation in a criminial street gang, both felonies. The latter charge resulted from both men being identified by police as members of a criminal gang and known felons, Tross said, though he declined to elaborate.

Toledo listed his occupation as cashier, while Calderon is a carpenter. Both men remain in custody at Marin County Jail on $50,000 bail and are scheduled to be arraigned in Marin Superior Court on Tuesday.
