Police Arrest Two People After Finding Loaded Assault Weapon in Car in Bel Marin Keys

Investigation dates back to April 23, when police confiscated a gun inside a repossessed car.

Novato Police arrested a Fairfield man and a Vallejo woman on suspicion of a host of charges Tuesday after they found a loaded assault weapon in their car on Galli Drive in Bel Marin Keys.

Novato police Detective Sgt. Mike Howard said the case dates back to April 23, when Novato police learned that a handgun had been found inside a car that had been repossessed and towed to a Bel Marin Keys location. Police confiscated the gun.

According to Howard, 22-year-old Blake David-Murry and 18-year-old Monica Torres-Mendozan came to Bel Marin Keys Tuesday afternoon to retrieve the gun. Novato police contacted them on Galli Drive and found a loaded assault pistol in their car.

Davis-Murry and Torres-Mendoza were booked into Marin County Jail on suspicion of possessing an assault weapon, carrying a loaded gun in public and carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle. Police tacked on allegations of drug possession and driving under the influence for Murry

Howard noted that "further charges are anticipated."

So, the question is: What is an "assault pistol"? And, if they had only a loaded non-assault pistol would they also have been arrested? If they would have been arrested anyway, what if the purpose of using the term "assault pistol" in the article? Does it convey information, or is it bias?

An assualt pistol / gun is a fully automatic weapon. I am sure you can easily get one or two in a dark ally somewhere in Oakland or Richmond. They are highly illegal.

You can get them at Wyndover, Richmond's outpost in target rich Novato.

@Christine I would not jump to such conclusions seeing as it may have been semi automatic and still looked like something portrayed in a movies to be fully automatic. However, many are not full auto though they may be easily converted. I would agree with Brant's question of "what is an assault pistol?" This term invoked more questions than clarity in my mind and came across as a buzz word to stir things up rather than provide a more clear picture of the event.
