Rash of Recent ATM-Related Frauds

The following information from Dec. 5–7 was supplied by the Novato Police Department. Arrests do not indicate a conviction.

The Headliner: 

Dec. 6-7 – (See bolded items below.) 

Dec. 5

8:18 a.m. – A coyote was reported seen in the vicinity of Arthur Street and Novato Boulevard.  The on-call Humane Society Officer was advised.  He responded to move the animal along. 

9:33 a.m. – An identity theft was reported on Driftwood Avenue. Parents discovered that unknown(s) were using their daughter’s social security number.  They found out after receiving a wage garnishment from the IRS.

2:17 p.m. – A fraud was reported on Gustafson Court.  Unknown(s) used a victim’s debit card twice to withdraw funds.  

3:09 p.m. – A burglary was reported on Hune Court.  Unknown(s) broke a screen and pried open a bathroom window to gain access into the home.  Jewelry, a camera and computer equipment were taken. 

4:01 p.m. – A fraud was reported on Tinker Way.  A victim’s debit card was used to make a withdrawal at an ATM in Hercules.  The victim never lost possession of the card. 

4:55 p.m. – A welfare check was requested for a man found laying in the bushes in the 7500 block of Redwood Boulevard. He was booked into Marin County Jail for publick drunkenness. 

9:05 p.m. – A fraud was reported in the 1500 block of South Novato Boulevard.  Unknown(s) withdrew $400 from a victim's account.  The bank had notified the reporting party. 

Dec. 6 

10:40 a.m. – Suspicious circumstances were reported at Lynwood School after a girl in the third grade said she was afraid to leave the classroom after being followed on her way to school by a white van. The girl’s mother was contacted and officer(s) documented the incident. 

12:13 p.m. – A fraud was reported in the 1900 block of Benton Lane.  A victim’s debit card was used for numerous transactions in San Luis Obispo and in Santa Maria.  

1:43 p.m. – An identity theft was reported at the Lucky’s store on Grant Avenue.  A victim who had used the self-checkout now has a loss of $400. Unknown(s) withdrew cash from an ATM in Oakland. 

8:56 p.m. – A fraud was reported in the 2000 block of Shady Lane.  Unknown(s) used the victim’s debit card to withdraw $1,312 from his account.  Several transactions were made in San Francisco and Pasadena. 

Dec. 7 

8:28 a.m. – A welfare check was requested for a 4-year-old child that was found running naked in the 700 block of Rowland Boulevard.  The reporting party said the child had run back into the house but nobody was home.  The mother was contacted who said her brother-in-law was watching the child and did not realize that the child had gotten out of bed and went outside.  The parent will get a special door handle to prevent a reoccurrence. 

12:45 p.m. – A suspicious man smelling of alcohol was reported walking toward the Shell gas station on Entrada Drive. The man was contacted and found to be unable to care for himself.  He was transported to Marin County Jail on suspicion of public drunkenness. 

4:17 p.m. – A man in the lobby of the Humane Society on Bel Marin Keys was reported to be intoxicated and staggering. He was arrested on suspicion of public drunkenness and booked into the Marin County Jail.  An additional complaint was filed for a probation violation. 

4:18 p.m. – An employee of a store on Vintage Way stole merchandise and then gave it to friends. The employee then quit mid-shift.  The incident occurred two days ago.  The investigation is ongoing. 

5:46 p.m. – An identity theft was reported on Queva Vista.  The reporting party said that unknown(s) had taken $600 from her checking account.  The transaction occurred in Oakland. 

9:11 p.m. – A burglary was reported at the Lucky’s store on Grant Avenue.  An identified man was captured on surveillance video taking alcohol from the store on 34 occasions.  A complaint was requested.
