A man and woman from Novato were hospitalized after being injured and trapped in their car in a solo crash on U.S. Highway 101 in Larkspur early Saturday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Burton Greenspan and Donna Kalal, both 65, were heading north on Highway 101 near the Sir Francis Drake Boulevard onramp at about 1 a.m. when, for unknown reasons, their VW Golf veered across the roadway and onto the right-hand shoulder, according to CHP Sgt. Marcus Bartholomew.
The car continued onto a rock embankment next to the highway before slamming into a concrete barrier on the shoulder, causing major damage to the vehicle and trapping the occupants inside.
The CHP issued a Sig-alert and three lanes were closed for about 90 minutes as emergency crews worked to extricate the victims from the car and clear debris off of the roadway.
Greenspan and Kalal were taken to Marin General Hospital in Greenbrae. Greenspan suffered major injuries in the collision while Kalal suffered moderate injuries, according
to the CHP.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
