Novato Police to Go After Repeat DUI Offenders Driving Without Licenses

The agency is participating in the California DMV's "hot list" program.

By Bay City News Service:

The Novato Police Department has teamed up with the state Department of Motor Vehicles in an effort to keep suspended drivers with prior DUI convictions off the road, police announced Thursday.

Officers will receive a "Hot List" from the DMV twice a month, outlining all people in the area with at least two prior DUI convictions and a suspended license, police said.

There are over 130 such drivers in Novato, police said.

With the DMV-supplied list, officers can use sting operations and stakeouts to catch suspended drivers. The list will contain the names, addresses, and vehicle descriptions of the offenders.

According to Novato police, 75 percent of drivers convicted of DUI continue to drive despite having suspended or revoked licenses.

The DMV's Hot List program began two years ago and has recently been expanded to 35 cities and counties across California.
