Novato Man Leaves Robbery Attempt in Taxi, Gets Nabbed

Suspect told gas station attendant in Martinez that he had a gun but never showed one.

A Novato man was arrested in Martinez early this morning after allegedly attempting to rob a gas station then fleeing in a taxi, Martinez police said.

Police said 30-year-old Gregory Sloan Franklin entered a Valero gas station at 4141 Alhambra Ave. at about 5:25 a.m. and told the cashier that he was carrying a firearm. He demanded the money in the register, police said.

When the clerk fumbled while attempting to open the register, Franklin left the store without taking any money or merchandise, according to police.

He allegedly fled in a taxi and was stopped and arrested by responding officers, police said.

Franklin did not brandish a weapon, police said. He has been booked into the Martinez Detention Facility.
