Novato Man Arrested after Striking Teen in Crosswalk in Petaluma

Driver was reportedly drunk when his car hit teen, according to police.

A 15-year-old boy suffered major injuries while crossing the street New Year's Eve in Petaluma when he was struck by a drunk driver from Novato.

The boy was crossing with friends in a marked crosswalk at East Washington Avenue and Edith Street, near Whole Foods, at about 12:40 a.m., according to Petaluma Police's Sgt. Ken Savano.

The driver, Wesley Pickford, 20, of Novato was driving westbound in the right lane and reportedly did not see the stopped vehicles or the pedestrians crossing the street, police said. A breathalyzer test showed Pickford's blood alcohol level was .15 percent, twice the legal amount, according to police.

Pickford was arrested and booked on suspicion of felony drunken driving and is being held on $30,000 bail at Sonoma County Jail. The victim, who was not being named in public because he's a minor, was transported to a hospital and was in stable condition.
