Update: Fatal Gang Fight in San Rafael Results in Four Arrests

Early report that one male teen detained was a Novato High graduate proves false, according to Novato Unified School District officials.

San Rafael police arrested four teens involved in a gang fight Wednesday that resulted in , police said.

An early report that one of the teens was a Novato High student is false, according to Novato Unified School District officials. There is no record that the boy in question attended Novato public schools, the district said Thursday night. The Novato connection had been provided by San Rafael police.

A group of males were seen running with sticks and baseball bats at about 5 p.m. near the on B Street. They soon left in two cars, one a white Pontiac Grand Am and the other a red Ford Explorer, according to police spokeswoman Margo Rohrbacher,

The driver of the Explorer chased the Grand Am down to Woods Street in Gerstle Park, where they stopped in a cul de sac and began fighting in the street, Rohrbacher said.

Three men in the Explorer were stabbed, one of them was 21-year-old Jeffrie Lee Olmstead of Corte Madera, according to Rohrbacher.

Olmstead told his friends to leave him and went to the doorstep of a nearby residence to ask for help. He collapsed in the front yard of the house and the residents called for paramedics as the other cars fled, Rohrbacher said.

Paramedics rushed Olmstead to Marin General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The two other men were dropped off at the emergency room with minor injuries and taken into police custody after being treated, according to Rohrbacher.

About 20 minutes after the incident, highway patrol officers stopped the red Ford Explorer on Tamal Vista Boulevard in Corte Madera. The suspect was taken into custody and is being held for questioning, Rohrbacher said.

Two other men believed to be involved in the incident arrived at the emergency room without injuries and were also taken into police custody for questioning, she said.

Shortly after midnight, officers found the unoccupied Grand Am on Front Street in San Rafael. After interviewing several witnesses, detectives arrested Carlos Guiterrez, 18, at his Canal Street home at about 2 a.m., according to police.

Guiterrez is a student at Madrone High School and the other three suspects witnesses identified are juveniles. Two of the boys attend County Community School. The fourth was identifed incorrectly as a Novato High student and it is unknown which school he attended.

The suspects involved are known to have gang connections based on previous contacts, Rohrbacher said. She added the suspects are being booked in Marin County Jail on charges of murder and gang enhancement.
