Novato Gas Leak Fixed, Traffic Still Backed Up

A North Marin Water District work crew ruptured a 2-inch plastic gas line this afternoon on De Long Avenue near Machin Avenue in Novato, a Novato Fire Protection District spokeswoman said.

PG&E has stopped a gas leak caused when a North Marin Water District work crew ruptured a 2-inch plastic gas line on De Long Avenue near Machin Avenue in Novato this afternoon, Novato Fire Protection District spokeswoman Sandy Wargo said.

The PG&E crew squeezed shut the end of the gas line around 4:10 p.m. and will install a 2- to 4-foot section of pipe, Wargo said.

Traffic in the De Long Avenue area near Machin and Sherman avenues is still backed up, and motorists are advised to use San Marin Drive or Rowland Boulevard instead of De Long Avenue, Wargo said.

There were no evacuations because buildings in the immediate area of the break were vacant, Wargo said.

Winds helped to quickly dissipate the leaking gas.

The break in the 800 block of De Long Avenue happened around 1:30 p.m.

The work crew immediately called 911 and PG&E after the pipe was ruptured, Wargo said.

The crew was installing a 12-inch water line for the new city of Novato administration center when the gas line was ruptured, Wargo said.

The project, which is expected to take up to two weeks, requires digging a 4-foot-deep trench along 100 feet of De Long Avenue and 180 feet of Machin Avenue, Wargo said.
