Novato Drunk Driving Suspect has Two Prior DUIs

Suspects's blood alcohol level was allegedly more than twice the legal limit when he was arrested on Sunday, police said.

A Novato man arrested on suspicion of DUI earlier this week was on probation for two prior drunken driving convictions – including one earlier this year – the Marin Independent Journal reports.

Miguel Zepeda-Castanon, 39, was arrested on suspicion of DUI on Sunday, Novato police Lt. Jennifer Welch told the IJ. The district attorney's office has charged him with DUI, among other charges.

Novato police officers who pulled over the suspect for a traffic violation determined he was inebriated and driving on a suspended license for a prior DUI conviction, the report said.

The suspect's blood alcohol level was allegedly over 0.19, which is more than double the legal limit, the report said.

Zepeda-Castanon was convicted for DUIs in March 2011 and April of this year, the report said. Prosecutors will seek to revoke his probation.

Driving under the influence is an especially sensitive subject in Novato, where in 2009 9-year-old Melody Osheroff was killed by an intoxicated and speeding motorcyclist who had at least eight prior DUI convictions.

An annual Memorial Day Weekend DUI checkpoint in Novato is held in Osheroff's honor.
