'Mr. Magoo Bandit,' Who Struck at a Novato Bank in August, Remains at Large

FBI and Novato PD asking for help in identifying the suspect.

The FBI is asking for the public's help in capturing a bank robber dubbed the "Mr. Magoo Bandit" who is believed responsible for nine robberies, including one at a bank in Novato.

The suspect has been connected to an Aug. 29 robbery at a in Novato and a Sept. 17 robbery at a Chase Bank in South San Francisco as well as six bank robberies in San Diego and one in Camarillo.

The suspect has not produced any weapons during the robberies. Instead, he places a note on the counter demanding money from tellers.

The suspect entered the US Bank at 1711 Novato Blvd. at 3:10 p.m. Aug. 29 and demanded money from a teller, Sgt. Jay Demski said at the time. The man was given some cash and left the bank. Nobody was hurt, Demski said.

A search by patrol officers and detectives yielded no suspects, and the investigation is continuing. Police did not release the amount of cash the man took.

Novato police circulated a surveillance photo to try and identify the man, who was wearing a gray T-shirt, blue jeans, reading glasses and back shoes with white soles.

He has been described as a white male in his 40s, weighing about 200 pounds with a medium build. He is bald, with short dirty blond hair and wears prescription glasses.

The FBI is working with local law enforcement in the affected cities. Anyone with information on the identity or whereabouts of the suspect is asked to contact the FBI at 415-553-7400 in Bay Area. US Bank is offering $25,000 to anyone with information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect. Citizens with any information are urged to call the police department at 897-1122 or 1-800-848-0101.
