Missing Woman Found by Petaluma Police

19-year-old with developmental disabilities apparently was camping after running away from home on Aug. 10.

There was a happy ending Wednesday .

Elise Hays, who spent time growing up in Novato before moving to Petaluma with her family last year, was found in Petaluma on Wednesday afternoon by police detectives, five days after she ran away from home.

"We're thanking all the citizens for their help, the people who called with tips," Petaluma Sgt. Jim Stephenson said. "It's awesome."

Hays was found in the Payran area of Petaluma in a spot where they believe she had been camping, according to Sgt. Tara Salizzoni. There was no word on whether officers randomly located her or if they were acting on a tip.

Hays was quickly reunited with her family, according to a press release.

Earlier Wednesday, Phil Hays appealed to friends at his Novato church asking for help in locating his daughter, and the church staff sent out a mass e-mail to its congregation to have people keep an eye peeled for Elise.
