Officer on traffic stop notices rifle with silencer in man's car.

A traffic stop in downtown Novato resulted in the discovery of a rifle with a homemade silencer in the driver’s car, said Tuesday.

Paul Gordon Hughes, 70, was pulled over at the Novato Fair shoping center on Diablo Avenue for a seatbelt violation at 10:06 a.m., said Sgt. Eric Riddell. The officer noticed a firearm in the car and later identified it as a .22 caliber rifle equipped with a homemade silencer. It was missing a serial number as well, police said.

Hughes was arrested and booked into Marin County Jail at 11 a.m. He faces two felony charges of unlawful possession of a weapon.
