Inmate Found Dead in Marin County Jail

Deputies tried to resuscitate unidentified man Monday; investigation is ongoing.

A 45-year-old inmate at the Marin County Jail died Monday and a full investigation into how it happened is under way, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office said in a release Tuesday. The man has not been publicly identified.

Deputies at the jail found the man unresponsive in his cell at noon Monday and began emergency resuscitation as paramedics from the San Rafael Fire Department were called. The paramedics declared the man dead.

The death is being investigated by the in accordance with a countywide in-custody death protocol, the release said. Sheriff’s Lt. Barry Heying said Novato is part of rotation to investigate such incidents.

The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a coroner’s investigation and the Marin County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an internal investigation. Heying said it will be up to the Novato investigators to release more information about the man when they see fit.
