Police Referee Spat Between Anti-SMART Petitioners and Vocal Opponent

The following information from Jan. 11-15 was supplied by the Novato Police Department. Arrests do not indicate a conviction.

The Headliner: 

Jan. 14, 12:02 p.m. – A verbal disturbance was reported in front of the Safeway store on Nave Drive.  A group of petitioners were in an argument with another person.  The reporting party said the people were using abusive language and that customers were upset.  The reporting party had also asked the group of petitioners to leave the premises and they have refused to do so.  Officer(s) determined that a person opposing SMART train system and a proponent were in a verbal argument.  Advice was given to the proponent regarding his actions and how to go about properly conveying his message.  

Jan. 11

9:11 a.m. – A reporting party said a white man in his 40s was smoking marijuana in the vicinity of the Safeway store on Diablo Avenue.  He was issued a citation for possession. 

10:35 a.m. – A homeless encampment was reported in the vicinity of Palmer Drive and Redwood Boulevard.  A yellow tent and debris was seen in the area. A man said he has been staying at the same location for the past year.  He was advised to have his camp broken down by the weekend.

2:01 p.m. – A person at Novato High School reported having a student in possession of marijuana.  The 14-year-old was cited for possession and released to a parent. 

3:29 p.m. – Shoplifting was reported at the CVS store on Grant Avenue.  A boy was accused to taking a 32-ounce bottle of beer.  The boy was described as white, about six feet tall, with black curly hair and wearing a sweatshirt and blue jeans.  He was with a black boy wearing a blue down jacket and they were headed over the bridge near the Novato Library.  They were gone on arrival.  The loss was about $3. 

6:30 p.m. – A woman in custody at Lucky market on Grant Avenue on suspicion of shoplifting $80 worth of hard alcohol.  Loss prevention staff had detained the woman, who admitted to the theft.  She was on probation for prior thefts and had a burglary tool in her possession. 

8:27 p.m. – A stolen vehicle was recovered in the 200 block of Alameda Del Prado.  The registered owner was contacted who came to the location and picked up his vehicle. 

9:39 p.m. – A 16-year-old white boy in a blue flannel shirt was reported to be vandalizing property in the 1700 block of Novato Boulevard.  The reporting party can hear crashing noises in the parking lot.  The boy was cited for vandalism and the boy’s mother was advised that a contact card was left for the business owner.  The damage was approximately $400. 

10:02 p.m. – A burglary was reported at the Lucky market on Grant Avenue.  A man was detained in the security office after he was suspected of taking $530 in merchandise from the store.  The man was booked for a probation violation, false representation to a police officer, possession of a hypodermic syringe, possession of drug paraphernalia, receiving stolen property and possession of false identification.  There were also additional charges involving outstanding bench warrants out of San Francisco.  There was one for a felony and two for misdemeanors. 

Jan. 12 

6:31 a.m. – An unwanted person was reported on Ignacio Lane.  The reporting party said that a black man, about 5-foot-9 and wearing a heavy blue jacket, was sleeping in the laundry room.  Extra patrols were requested because the reporting party said this is an ongoing issue with this person. 

7:21 a.m. – A burglary was reported on Nave Court.  Unknown(s) took cash from a gold Honda. 

7:33 a.m. – Vandalism was reported in the 1700 block of Novato Boulevard.  Unknown(s) smashed planters overnight.  Damage was estimated at $4,000. 

9:25 a.m. – Shoplifting was reported at the CVS store on Grant Avenue.  A boy stole a bottle of alcohol from the store. The reporting party described him as a 16-year-old Hispanic boy with black hair, wearing a black sweatshirt, black hat and dark pants.  He was last seen headed for the creek area behind U.S. Bank.  He was cited and released for shoplifting and a violation of probation. 

1:34 p.m. – Fraud was reported on Sequoia Glen Lane.  Unknown(s) used the victim’s access card to make fraudulent withdrawals from the reporting party’s checking account.  The reporting party never lost possession of the card. 

1:56 p.m. – At least two students at Novato High School were cited and released to family members for possession of marijuana. 

3:35 p.m. – A fraud was reported in the 700 block of McClay Road.  A victim’s checks were stolen and cashed in Novato. 

5:06 p.m. – Vandalism was reported in the 1000 block of Seventh Street.  A green Ford Ranger was broken into overnight.  Unknown(s) used an object in the victim’s vehicle door lock and caused permanent damage. 

Jan. 13 

7:19 a.m. – A burglary was reported on Leland Drive.  A victim said someone stole his $3,000 mountain bike overnight.  The investigation is ongoing. 

9:06 a.m. – Trespassing was reported at DeBorba’s Lounge.  The reporting party said a white man in his 50s was in the bar throwing things, taking off clothes and acting very aggressive. He refused to leave the bar after displaying out-of-control behavior. 

11:31 a.m. – A reporting party at Whole Foods market on De Long Avenue said the store had received counterfeit $5 bills.  The incident occurred last night. 

1:31 p.m. – Vandalism was reported in the vicinity of Cross Creek Way and Robinhood Drive.  A street sign and a mailbox were knocked down.  

2:09 p.m. – A burglary was reported in the vicinity of Fourth Street and Grant Avenue.  Two people broke into a white Volkswagen van and fled.  They were last seen running to the rear of a business next to Circle Bank.  At least one was booked on suspicion of burglary with gang enhancement. 

3:45 p.m. – Vandalism was reported in the vicinity of Fourth Street and Grant Avenue.  One was arrested on suspicion of vandalism and transported to Marin County Juvenile Hall and released. 

3:49 p.m. – Graffiti vandalism was reported in the 1300 block of Yukon Way.  Gang taggings were found on two complex signs. 

5:03 p.m. – Graffiti vandalism was reported in the 1400 block of South Novato Boulevard. 

5:09 p.m. – Graffiti vandalism was reported in the vicinity of Lark Court and South Novato Boulevard. 

7:37 p.m. – A health and safety violation was reported at America’s Best Value Inn on Redwood Boulevard.  One was arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest and a probation violation and booked into the Marin County Jail. 

8:50 p.m. – A man was arrested and booked on suspicion of public drunkenness in the vicinity of South Novato Boulevard and Rowland Boulevard.  He was booked into Marin County Jail. 

Jan. 14 

10:59 a.m. – A stolen vehicle was reported in the 400 block of Cutlass Drive.  Unknown(s) stole a 1990 black Acura from a complex parking lot between the buildings with the addresses of 500 and 1000.  

12:31 p.m. – Vandalism was reported in the 1100 block of Grant Avenue.  The window of a business had been broken out.  It is not know if anything has been stolen at this point.  Damage is estimated to be $300. 

2:52 p.m. – A petty theft was reported in the 300 block of Vintage Way.  A pallet of cardboard was stolen from the bin area to the rear of the stores.  The plate information from an associated truck was provided.  Security also reported that the driver was a Hispanic man wearing a light blue shirt. 

3:22 p.m. – A driver in the vicinity of Grant Avenue and Redwood Boulevard was booked into Marin County Jail on suspicion of driving under the influence. 

6:43 p.m. – A white man about 40 years old, wearing a light hat and jacket was reported to be smashing a newspaper machine and flipping shopping carts and screaming in the vicinity of the Safeway store on Diablo Avenue.   The man was arrested and booked on suspicion of public drunkenness. 

9:19 p.m. – A person was booked for driving under the influence in the vicinity of De Long Avenue and Redwood Boulevard.  The person was also suspected of carrying a dangerous weapon. 

10:05 p.m. – A burglary was reported in the 100 block of Oliva Court.  Unknown(s) entered a residence through a sliding door by breaking a lock.  The loss is two laptops, an iPad and miscellaneous jewelry. 

10:16 p.m. – A robbery was reported in the vicinity of Redwood Boulevard and Scottsdale Way.  The reporting party was walking southbound on Redwood Boulevard when three black men 19 to 22 years old approached him.  One put a gun to the back of his head.  The man holding the gun was last seen wearing dark clothing and a black hoodie.  The three ran off toward Scottsdale Way by the bridge area.  Two were arrested for attempted robbery, one of who was also arrested on an outstanding warrant. 

Jan. 15

3:05 a.m. – An assault and battery was reported in the 5400 block of Nave Drive.  A front door was kicked in and an altercation ensued between roommates.  

1:55 p.m. – A burglary was reported on Park Crest Court.  A lock was pried off a storage unit overnight.  A shop vac, knives and other miscellaneous tools were taken. 

4:12 p.m. – A reporting party in the 1700 block of Grant Avenue said he has a problem with continual thefts from a vehicle parked to the rear of the bakery.  The victim declined to file a report but wanted advice on policing issues related to “the pit” area.  Extra patrols were requested and will be performed. 

4:22 p.m. – A reporting party said a Hispanic man wearing blue jeans and white shoes was seen laying in the driveway of the Frank Howard Allen building on Diablo Avenue.  The man was booked on suspicion of public drunkenness. 

4:59 p.m. – Weapon brandishing was reported at the 7-Eleven store on Diablo Avenue. The reporting party said two black kids came into the store and one of them showed the reporting party a knife after a dispute about the price of an item.  The one displaying the knife wore a gray jacket, was about 5-foot-7 and had a thin build. 

10:46 p.m. – An aggravated assault was reported on Inyo Circle.  The reporting party said her grandmother’s boyfriend pushed her grandmother and will not leave the residence.  The boyfriend does not live at the premises.   The grandmother declined medical attention.
