Hunters Rescued When Small Boat Nearly Capsizes

Aluminum craft struggled in San Pablo Bay swells; two young men unhurt.

Two occupants of a small boat were rescued unhurt off the eastern Novato bayfront Monday morning after the craft got stuck near a duck blind, the Novato Fire District reported.

At 7:21 a.m., a 911 caller from Southern Marin reported that he was in cell phone contact with his son, who was on a boat off the marshlands between Black Point and Bel Marin Keys, according to Novato Fire Division Chief Mark Heine. The area is popular with duck hunters at this time of the year.

The boat, roughly 12 to 15 feet in length, was reportedly stuck near a duck blind and in danger of taking on water because of high swells on San Pablo Bay, Heine said.

"They had tied off and were getting back into the boat, and the swells sort of locked them into that spot," Heine said. "They were worried about capsizing."

Fire crews went to the Black Point boat launch near the base of the Petaluma Bridge. Water rescue specialists from the Marin County Urban Search and Rescue team, based at the Alto station in Strawberry, launched an inflatable boat and a Jet Ski from Black Point and headed onto the bay toward the southeast, just south of the mouth of Novato Creek. A Marin County Sheriff's Department boat also went to the area of the distress call.

The two boaters, men around 20 years old wearing camouflage outfits, were quickly located in an aluminum boat with an outboard motor and escorted back to Black Point about 80 minutes after the emergency call, Heine said. Neither required medical attention.

HUNTING? We have hunting in Marin? I never knew...
Brent Ainsworth (Editor) January 21, 2013 at 04:11 pm
Never can tell if you're joking, Lou! For those who don't know, residents of Bel Marin Keys hear blasts all the time from the hunters out in the wetlands. Anyone who lives out there want to vouch?
Novatan January 21, 2013 at 04:53 pm
I can vouch. I don't personally hunt but am an avid kayaker and see the duck blinds out there regularly. Yesterday I was biking in China Camp and could hear the blasts, too.

Well, according to Tom Stienstra they're not killing very many.
Kathryn Chipman January 22, 2013 at 11:57 am
As an animal lover I'm glad they're not killing many. Ducks mate for life so it pains me to know that a duck lost its mate.

Wanna see some serious hunting? Check out the cougars at Wildfox on Friday.

Absolutely. I am in BMK and hear the hunters frequently.

Susan thank you for posting this. Chris Pareja is an articulate speaker whose message needs to beRead More acknowledged. While community activists claim Plan Bay Area is the answer Chris uses their own statistics to point out how little is accomplished and the real hypocrisy behind advocates claims that it will provide "equity". Chris attended the Plan Bay Area Debate at the Civic Center and spoke there as well. Kinsey completely ignored his comments and kept repeating the party line: Plan Bay Area is the only answer we have so it is "good enough." Anyone who hasn't yet should take the time to watch the debate as it is a real eye opener. Kinsey's responses are quite disconcerting if he is being touted as the local expert on Plan Bay Area. I was shocked by how little he seems to understand. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOE7Hyd5B40&feature=youtu.be

Which is a fair assumption since my name and face are on it for now. Sorry for the confusion. In theRead More interim, I am more than happy to answer questions or address any concerns about the new design or our coverage of the community.
Tina McMillan June 17, 2013 at 01:03 pm
Jim What is the best way to reach you with questions and offers of help? If there is a way toRead More personalize each Patch to its community that would make a huge difference. Brent would post news articles as the primary focus. The comparison to a "penny saver" is the biggest problem with the new design. It does not favor news which is what many people are interested in. If San Rafael Patch is hosting the Plan Bay Area articles then doesn't it make sense to cross post them to Novato's front page too? Looking for news was never a problem with the old Patch, now finding the news in the middle of the garage sales, ads for businesses and announcements is where many people are stuck. It's unfortunate that Back Bay is the old design. It means corporate is throwing out what was the best of Patch. Is there anyone to write to, to suggest that the changes in format are not supportive of a online news source?
