Homeless Invited to Novato Backyard Wear Out Their Welcome
One too many calls to police causes problem on Arthur Street.
A Good Samaritan in Novato's Presidents neighborhood has been giving out too much of a good thing.
Margaret Bengale has allowed the homeless to camp out in her backyard at 601 Arthur St. and live out of her garage, according to the . However, concerned neighbors and apparent disorderly conduct issues have resulted in numerous calls to police.
Neighbors have expressed concern that the visitors are taking advantage of Bengale. Safety and welfare issues have been voiced, too, as a single mom with a juvenile live within close proximity to the residence. Police have called Bengale's relatives to ensure they are also aware of the situation.

One recent early morning call to the police from a neighbor indicated that Bengale was scared. She told poliece she had called her neighbor about two people who were in her garage who appeared drunk and were making a mess. She said wanted the two men removed. Officers responded and one person was arrested for public drunkenness.
The police have received at least five calls to the property in the recent weeks, which is on the same block as Novato High School. Officers now have permission to freely access the side gate and the garage at any time to determine if there are any unwanted subjects overdosing on sympathy.
