Grass Fire Breaks Out at Homeless Encampment

No one injured in blaze that claims less than half an acre

Novato firefighters battled a small grass fire Saturday morning that started at a homeless encampment behind Safeway and Todds Road.

Dispatch received the call at 6:30am Saturday and raced to the area. The fire burned less than half an acre and took 30 minutes to extinguish, said Battalion Chief Jeff Velinquette.

The exact cause of the fire is not known and Novato Police are conducting their own investigation. No people were found at the encampment when first responders arrived.
