A Novato woman was killed and a man was injured when they were struck and run over by a dump truck in a San Rafael crosswalk early this afternoon, police said.

At 12:17 p.m., the couple was walking west on the south side of Third Street and was crossing Hetherton Street in a crosswalk when a loaded dump truck traveling west on Third Street turned left onto Hetherton and struck them, San Rafael police spokeswoman Margo Rohrbacher said.

The woman, identified as 67-year-old Olga Rodriguez of Novato, died at the scene and the man was taken to Marin General Hospital with major injuries, Cpl. Justin Graham said.

Both the pedestrians and the truck had a green light but the driver should have yielded to the pedestrians, according to Rohrbacher.

The truck driver said he didn't see the couple in the crosswalk, but stopped after he heard a sound and looked in his rearview mirror, Rohrbacher said.

"It was just horrible, it's heartbreaking" said Andy Falk, who was near the intersection at the time of the crash.

"That's just a really dangerous intersection, I cross there every day and people are always dodging cars."

Graham said it appears that alcohol is not a factor in the collision. It took place in a busy section of city streets, and San Rafael police are asking any witnesses to call them at (415) 485-3000.

Fus, Reread what I was talking about, not a direct response to what happened to that poor woman, just something I've observed at that intersection, since we're in agreement about saving innocent life, are we not?

Tragic, yes, and my heart goes out to the family, but let us learn how to prevent such a tragedy from reoccurring, and in that vein of saving innocent life, and not taking one's safety for granted on the streets, are we also supposed to remain silent about the cultural propensity for so many illegals to drive drunk? We are constantly being brainwashed with the lie that all cultures are equal, and we should accept every new arrival as a welcome addition, and you people elct politicians that punish the taxpayers and support illegals and their criminal ways, now California you have voted for a hands -off policy to Immigration interested in making your community safer by placing holds on criminal illegals at the jail, and the Sherrif is barred from cooperating. You even wish to issue licenses to people who cant read or speak the language of the road signs!!Get ready to see a lot more accidents and bloodshed, my compassionate friends.

You all stupid commenting about illegals this is not the issue here. There are life involved here and specially a wonderful woman that is no longer with us and will be missed by her family and friends. R.I.P. sister you will never be forgotten.

Tell us about her, and yourself, trucha. This is a forum for free speech, not a memorial service. Illegals are the issue in our lives, day in, day out, and our world has changed. It is ALWAYS on my mind. Are you part of the solution or part of the problem, Trucha ? Urban dictionary: "Trucha" Literally "trout" in Spanish, it is also Spanish slang for "alert", or "vigilant". It was a combined with the word "Salvadorian" to form "Salvatrucha", as in Mara Salvatrucha, or the street gang MS13. It is used as a warning, for example, similar to "heads-up". Truchas! Cops are coming! You a gangbanger, trucha?

RIP to your friend / family member, no one is disrespecting the deceased. This conversation was started a long time ago, and has nothing to do with her. The issue of people driving without licenses or drunk is very real, and may even have been a factor in this woman's passing. Now the state is welcoming illegals with driving privilege without knowledge of the rules, or being able to read? What do you think will happen? Everyone is in danger when we are re-releasing criminal aliens into the community instead of deporting them.
