Fairfield Motorcyclist Plunges 40 Feet in Novato Crash

Tony Henderson, 36, is in critical condition with major injuries but is likely to survive, authorities said.

A Fairfield motorcyclist is in critical condition with major injuries after a crash this morning on Highway 101 near the Highway 37 transition that snarled North Bay traffic, authorities said.

Tony Henderson, 36, plunged 40 feet after colliding with a concrete barrier, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said. He was taken to Marin General Hospital by Novato firefighters.

The collision occurred at about 8:05 a.m.

Henderson was riding southbound on Highway 101 and was transitioning to Highway 37 when he lost control of the vehicle, colliding with the right side of the cement barrier, CHP spokesman Andrew Barclay said.

The impact of the collision threw Henderson onto the No. 4 lane of Highway 101 northbound – an approximately 40-foot fall, Barclay said. The lane was blocked for about 25 minutes while emergency crews treated Henderson and prepared him for transport.

The No. 2 lane of Highway 37 eastbound where Henderson's 2007 Yamaha Twin Star Cruiser landed was blocked temporarily too, Barclay said.

Henderson was wearing a helmet and is likely to survive, Barclay said.

“This is a perfect example of how important it is to wear a motorcycle helmet when you are out riding,” Barclay said.

“Although Mr. Henderson's injuries were very serious it is highly likely that his life was saved by his helmet. Wearing a helmet isn't just the law, it is common sense.”
