CHP Says Man Bit Officer in Full View of Kids

The California Highway Patrol arrested a Novato man on suspicion of DUI and assaulting a CHP officer Sunday evening.

CHP officers responded to a solo-vehicle crash at about 6 p.m. on southbound Highway 101 south of Lakeville Highway in Petaluma, CHP Officer Jon Sloat said. CHP Officer Christopher Manly found a Dodge Magnum blocking the No. 2 lane and a woman with a small child standing nearby, Sloat said.

An off-duty U.S. Secret Service agent who stopped at the scene told the CHP officers that the Dodge was swerving and struck the center divider wall, then the right side concrete wall, Sloat said.

CHP officers contacted the driver, Abraham Sudueh, 47, of Novato, who was still seated in the Dodge, Sloat said. Sudueh appeared intoxicated when he got out of the car and was arrested for DUI, Sloat said.

Sudueh became combative and refused to follow the officer's orders, Sloat said. An additional CHP officer helped handcuff Sudueh, who began kicking and bit one of the officers on the arm as he was placed in a patrol vehicle, Sloat said.

Sudueh continued resisting officers and staff at the Sonoma County jail where he was booked on suspicion of DUI, resisting arrest, assault on an officer and resisting an officer by violence, Sloat said. Sudueh also faces a possible count of felony child endangerment of his 16-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son who were in his car, Sloat said.
