CHP Hunts for Driver Who Might've Caused Crash

Two cars and one motorcycle were involved in a wreck Sunday on southbound 101 north of Novato, and witnesses said another driver cut off the motorcyclists and fled.

Two people on a motorcycle were hospitalized Sunday afternoon after a three-vehicle collision on southbound Highway 101 between Novato and Petaluma, sources said.

The two injured people were a man and a woman who were on a 2000 Yamaha XVS 1100 that lost control and hit the pavement near San Antonio Road at about 4:39 p.m., according to California Highway Patrol officer Ralph Caggiano. The injuries were minor and both were taken to Novato Community Hospital by a crew from the , said Captain Scott Freedman.

Caggiano said CHP officers were attempting to locate a driver who might have caused the collision and then sped off. After talking to witnesses, including the motorcycle riders, investigators said they were looking for a woman with black hair who was driving a black or dark-colored Honda Accord.

Both southbound lanes were shut down for 10 to 15 minutes just north of the Silveira Ranch, causing slow traffic in Petaluma.

We came onto this accident just after it occurred. I called 911 to report the person on the ground. We also saw the car that made the left turn, although at the time I didn't know it was the vehicle that caused the accident. Now I'm sorry I didn't follow the car. Hope the motorcyclists will be recover quickly.

Is it possible that the driver who caused the collision was unlicensed, unsafe, and uninsured? Bad driving is likely among those whose driving skills have never been tested.

I saw it happen in my rear view mirror. I knew something bad was going to happen. There were five cars waiting to turn. Two of them were vying to get across. Looked to me like the southern car was trying to beat the other. Frustrated on waiting on them. I think their view was blocked and never saw the motorcycle. Lots of smoke. Sure glad to hear that the motorcycle couple are okay. I passed them just minutes before. They looked like they were having a very nice ride. With three cars lined up behind them, I was pretty sure they had a perfect view and an easy police report. Never thought anyone would get out of that mess.
