US-101 Car Accident Causes Power Outage

PG&E closed two of three traffic lanes on the Novato Narrows to repair the fallen power line.

Pacific Gas and Electric crews are working to repair power lines that dropped due a car accident on US-101 early this morning.

At approximately 1 a.m. Sunday, a car was traveling northbound on US-101 near the Atherton Avenue exit, when the driver lost control of the car and ran into a power line. The impact sheared the power pole at the base and caused the lines to fall, said Novato Fire Division Chief Mark Heine.

The fallen lines sparked a small grass fire that was contained, according to Heine. The incident resulted in a power outage for the surrounding area, including Gnoss Airport. The outage affected 24 households, according to the PG&E power outage map.

No one was injured in the accident and the reason for why the driver swerved is unknown at this time.

PG&E crews are still working to repair the pole. They closed two of three traffic lanes on the Novato Narrows, Heine said. The estimated time of restoration is 2 p.m., according to the outage map.
