Boy in Critical Condition Following Friday Accident

14-year-old transferred from Marin General to Oakland hospital.

A 14-year-old boy was in critical condition with head injuries Saturday after being struck by a car Friday evening in Novato, authories said.

The boy, unidentified by and the because of his age, was taken to Marin General Hospital after the vehicle vs. pedestrian incident near the intersection of Novato Boulevard and Twin Creeks Court. The boy was subsequently moved to Children's Hospital and Research Center in Oakland.

According to a police report released Saturday, the boy was crossing the road when he was hit by an SUV traveling eastbound on Novato Boulevard at 6:39 p.m. A  41-year-old Novato man was driving the SUV and was credited by first responders for applying first aid to the boy.

Fire Battalion Chief Mike Hughes said the boy darted out in front of the oncoming SUV and the driver had no chance to react, according to an interview with the driver.

The boy was among a group standing on one side of Novato Boulevard and tried to cross the street near the light at Tamalpais Avenue/Seventh Street, Hughes said. The driver was doing about 40 mph when the car struck the boy in front of 1683 Novato Blvd., about 30-40 feet from the nearest crosswalk, Hughes added.
