Bel Marin Keys Fire Leaves Condo Uninhabitable

Firefighters put out stairway blaze quickly but likely electrical fire causes major smoke damage in two-story unit.

A fire in a two-story condominium in Bel Marin Keys Saturday afternoon left the unit uninhabitable due to extensive smoke damage,  officials said.

The fire was reported at 12:18 p.m. Saturday, with firefighters arriving at the four-unit condo complex at 934 Bel Marin Keys Blvd. a few minutes later and spotting smoke coming from the end unit, according to Novato Fire Battalion Chief Mike Hughes.

Firefighters entered the building and discovered the carpet in a stairway in the condo on fire, Hughes said. The blaze was controlled by 12:34 p.m. but the unit was declared uninhabitable due to the smoke damage, Hughes said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but it appeared to be electrical in nature, Hughes said. The American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist the lone occupant of the unit, who was not at home at the time of the fire, according to Hughes.
