5 Slightly Injured When SUV Hits Parked Truck

Woman carrying five kids rams large truck on South Novato Boulevard.

Although the photos might leave people thinking the aftermath was a job for the county coroner's office, an SUV crash on South Novato Boulevard left five people with only minor injuries Wednesday, according to fire and police sources.

A 47-year-old woman driving a Mitsubishi Montero with four children aboard was distracted while driving near Gateway Drive at 3:10 p.m. and ran into the back of a parked box-tailed truck, said Sgt. Jennifer Dunlap of the . The front right corner of the SUV contacted the rear left corner of the parked truck, causing major damage to the passenger's side of the Mitsubishi, Dunlap said.

Captain Doug Fernandez of the said it was a very close call, especially for a 4-year-old girl who was in a booster seat next to the driver.

"That's where most of the impact was, and she was literally inches away from being crushed," Fernandez said.

The four kids — one 8-year-old, one 4-year-old and 2-year-old twins — were all hospitalized after the wreck. The driver complained of rib pain and the kids were bloodied and scared, but there were no major injuries, Dunlap said.

"Three of the four kids had bloody noses," she said. "A lot of the response (to area hospitals) was for observation because these were little kids."

Dunlap said the cause of the crash was under investigation, but the preliminary indication was that the woman's attention was diverted to one of the kids.
