3 Small Fires Quickly Put Out in Novato; 2 Started by Illegal Fireworks

All three calls were within 20 minutes of each other late Tuesday night.

Three small fires kept the crews busy Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning, and two were believed prompted by fireworks.

“Unfortunately people are still buying fireworks and still using them despite that they’re illegal here,” Novato Fire Captain Scott Freedman said. “We can only be so many place at one time.”

At 11:53 p.m., a crew took care of a small blaze at the west end of Rowland Boulevard, right at a hilltop trailhead. Freedman said neighbors heard fireworks go off before the fire started.

At 12:01 a.m., two fires on either side of Novato Boulevard were reported about a mile west of l near the entrance to . Freedman said fireworks were suspected there, too.

At 12:16 a.m., something at a homeless encampment caught fire behind the store on Nave Drive and a crew put it out quickly, Freedman said.
