PeaceNovato Vigil against Attacks on Syria a success.

Monday evening, September 9, 2013, saw citizens gather at over 165 locations in 41 states across the country to demonstrate to President Obama, Congress and the world that they do not support a unilateral attack by the United States on Syria. Anticipating a vote in Congress to authorize air strikes against Syria, the political organization MoveOn called for these coordinated nationwide protests.

In Marin County the lead demonstration was organized by grassroots organization PeaceNovato and drew over sixty people to Novato City Hall. Lining both sides of DeLong Avenue, the peaceful protest drew a few pro-war shouts, but motorists for the most part honked for peace, flashed headlights and peace signs.

The vigil, which began in daylight at 7pm, grew as people gathered and shared their views on the current situation and what role, if any, the United States should play in the Syrian Civil War. Some passing drivers stopped and joined in the vigil. As evening darkened, candles were lit and passed among the vigilers. Some sang songs of peace before the demonstration dispersed a little after 8:20 pm.

PeaceNovato co-founder Don Foster said “If you’d have told me ten years ago we’d be out here today, protesting another war, I wouldn’t have believed you. But here we are.” This thought, along with expressions like "here we go again..." and "didn't we learn anything last time", was echoed by many of those assembled.  Photos may be viewed at https://plus.google.com/photos/105411382475630415849/albums/5922814603106453521
