Proposal to Reduce NUSD Board Size

A grassroots movement has formed to reduce the number of NUSD Board of Trustees from 7 down to 5.

A grassroots movement is afoot to reduce the number of trustees on the  board down from seven to five. Novato resident and NUSD parent Peter Hamilton made his case to the board at its May 15 meeting. Now he has created an online petition asking the county Office of Education to put the decision to the voters.

If you've seen any of the emails making the rounds, or if you read the uploaded FAQ Hamilton and his group have created, you know that the move saves the district $20,000 or more each year. There is also an expectation of greater efficiency on the part of a smaller board as well as the ability to "make better decisions faster."

According to Hamilton, every school district in Marin has five board members except Novato.

Take a look at the FAQ. Then, if you're of the mind to do so, go sign the online petition here. Hamilton noted in an email that it's possible the Marin County Office of Education will require hard copy petitions, so stay tuned.

It's also possible that the NUSD Board of Trustees will look at the support such an effort might garner and decide to cut itself down to five without all of the additional expense an election could require.
