Death Notice: Robert Van Herick, 68

A cardiologist who worked at Novato Community Hospital and St. Mary's Hospital in San Francisco

Robert van Herick, a doctor at Novato Community Hospital and a Larkspur resident, passed away at his home November 11, according to Legacy.com.

He was 68.

Known as Bob to his friends, he leaves behind a beloved family and many friends, as well as an accomplished medical career.

Born February 25, 1945 in San Francisco, Bob grew up in the Sunset district and attended Lincoln High School. He met his wife Sonza at a residence hall dance at University of California Davis in 1963. They dated throughout college, and eventually married in 1968. Together they raised three sons. Bob received a Bachelors degree in physics from the University of California Davis in 1966. After graduating from the medical school at University of California Irvine in 1970, he served briefly overseas in the US Army.

He subsequently completed his residency at Orange County Medical Center and received his board certification in Cardiology. His career as private practice medical cardiologist spanned 35 years, most of it at Saint Mary's Hospital in San Francisco and Novato Community Hospital in Novato. Bob's favorite pastimes included sailing, bird watching, traveling, cooking, square-dancing, spending time outdoors, tinkering with computers, and listening to classical music.

After retiring in early 2013, he spent much of his time traveling with family and loved the time he spent sailing on San Francisco Bay. Bob is predeceased by his beloved parents, Louise and William, and his brother, Norman. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sonza; his sons, Andrew, Christopher, and David; daughter-in-law, Kristy; and two grandchildren, Connor and Olivia.

He also leaves behind numerous cousins and many dear friends. A memorial celebration will be held to honor his life on Saturday, December 28 at 2:00 p.m. at the Cove House, San Francisco Yacht Club, 98 Beach Road, Belvedere, CA, 94920. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that well-wishers please make donations in Bob's name to a favorite charity.
