Coroner Confirms ID of Body Found Down Embankment as Missing Elderly Man

Coroner's officials were able to confirm the identity through dental records.

By Bay City News Service:

The Marin County coroner's office has identified the man who was found dead Tuesday near a vehicle that went off state Highway 1 near Bolinas as Robert Leslie Davis, a 93-year-old San Rafael man who was reported missing in February.

Davis was last seen around 8 p.m. on Feb. 26 after he left Marin Joe's Restaurant at 1585 Casa Buena Drive in Corte Madera.  After his weekly dinner with his daughter, he drove toward U.S. Highway 101 and was reported missing the next day, San Rafael police said.

Marin County coroner's office Lt. Keith Boyd said dental records were used to identify Davis. The cause and manner of his death is still under investigation.

Human remains were found Tuesday near Davis' silver 2001 Toyota Camry vehicle that went down an embankment on Highway 1 north of Bolinas.

A Caltrans supervisor walking along the road during a routine check for slides and debris Tuesday morning spotted the Toyota Camry on its wheels 130 feet down an embankment, California Highway Patrol Officer Andrew Barclay said.

The driver's door was open and the airbags had deployed, Barclay said. The Caltrans supervisor looked inside the vehicle and found Davis' registration, Barclay said.

Davis' vehicle was traveling south on state Highway 1, Barclay said.  The road has many switchbacks and it appears the Toyota continued traveling straight where the road curved to the left, the officer said.

San Rafael police said Davis suffered from a medical condition and might have become disoriented after he left the restaurant.
