San Marin’s Cafeteria is Open for Business

The Café at San Marin High School is officially open.  The long-awaited cafeteria, known as the Café, is located in the new multi-use room, and offers a food service area that brings an entire different dining experience for many students.   Healthful meal options with an abundance of fresh fruits and veggies, along with a salad bar featuring local produce, are available to all students and staff.

The new kitchen, equipped as a full production cooking facility, allows the preparation and serving of healthier meals made with local, farm fresh foods.  It contains a Chefs most versatile piece of equipment: a large tilting braising pan, as well as a pasta cooker, double stack convection oven and induction burners.  There are plenty of work tables for food preparation, sinks to wash produce and a walk-in cooler and freezer to store all of fresh fruits and vegetables and frozen products.  The kitchen is also equipped with a dishwashing machine and a large dry storage room.

“It is evident that the school district administration and community members have placed a high priority on the health and wellness of our students”, commented Miguel Villarreal, Director of Food and Nutritional Services.  “Our students today are extremely health conscious consumers and serving them healthy food models positive wellness behaviors that will support them physically and academically.”

The multi-use room will serve as a Cybercafé during the day, where students can enjoy their meals, access the wireless internet and collaborate on their class assignments.  The Cybercafé is furnished with round tables and stand-alone chairs as well as the traditional lunch tables with benches.  Electronic charging stations are available throughout the building.  Students also enjoy an outdoor covered area complete with more tables and benches.  In the afternoons and evenings, the facility can be transformed into a gym for athletic practices or after school activities.

The multi-use room was officially opened in January 2014.  Built in the 1960’s and opening in 1968, this is San Marin High School’s first official cafeteria and multi-use room.
