NOVATO REDWOOD BUS STOP TO BECOME A BUS STATION

The Novato City Council, lead by Mr. Lucan, has voted 4-1 to build a new bus station at the existing downtown bus stop at Redwood & Grant. Pat Eklund voted no. This new bus station will be capable of handling up to 60 buses per hour when the current peak is 6 buses per hour.

The size, scope and cost of the transit facility is not supported by the ridership data from the MTA 2011 report. Much needed safety improvements have been delayed as the cost of the ambitious project escalates from 3 to 5 million dollars.

The purpose of this renovation was to update the current bus stop and to fix key safety issues-- providing  safer pedestrian crossing midblock on Redwood and better visibility for buses exiting the stop. Right now the city has $900,000 to complete these safety measures as well as to update the bus stop shelters. Why isn’t this being done?

This is not being done because the Council adopted an entirely new configuration which raises new safety concerns for pedestrians, while vastly increasing capacity for the regional bus system. Please send council members an email or letter saying "Please fix the current bus stop now to handle current needs and safety issues. The money is ready and waiting. "
