Mental Health Matters!

Since 1949, May has been observed as National Mental Health Awareness Month, a time when advocates and activists across the country draw attention to the mental health issues that affect as many as one in four Americans.

Unfortunately, because of the stigma associated with mental illness, many people are too ashamed or embarrassed to seek the help they need for themselves or their loved ones. National Mental Health Awareness Month is a time when we work together to break through that stigma.

Too often people are unable to access treatment for mental health problems, and use alcohol or drugs to self-medicate. Drinking alcoholic beverages is often seen as a way to relax, socialize or celebrate. However, drinking too much or drinking as a way of dealing with feelings of anxiety or depression can have negative consequences.

Sometimes when people are suffering and do not have support or resources to cope, they turn to suicide. The third leading cause of death for youth is suicide. Mental health awareness can highlight the importance of addressing mental health problems, and for children this is an important part of a child’s healthy development from birth.
