Student Wins County Final of Poetry Out Loud Competition

Shayna Maci Warner, a senior at the Marin School of the Arts program at Novato High School, won the 2014 Marin County Finals of the Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest, for a second consecutive year. Over 400 Marin County public and private high school students participated in Poetry Out Loud this school year. The county level competition included seven finalists representing each of their respective high schools. Olivia Lamont, a junior at San Marin High School, also participated.

Warner now advances to the state level of competition in Sacramento to be held in the California Senate Chambers on March 24, 2014. Winners at the state level receive $200, and an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete at the national level. The national winner will receive $20,000.

When asked what attracted her to participate in Poetry Out Loud, Shayna said, “Recitation makes otherwise inaccessible, somewhat mysterious language tangible, and its presentation is an opportunity to both engage with audiences and share stories. Poetry is, in essence, the art of storytelling.”
