Marin's JROTC works with astronauts for education

Marin’s JROTC and Building Better Citizens for America (BBCA) are collaborating with the Novato Space Museum team to improve education in Marin County.  Mrs. Susan Miller, BBCA President, organized this effort to give cadets an opportunity to obtain career guidance from real local heroes in the space, engineering, and aerospace science fields and to improve exposure of the space museum to our local youth.  This collaborative effort is a “win-win” since the JROTC program helps youth find a career path and the space museum’s mission is to have permanent space exhibits in the Bay Area to help educate youth about the exciting history of space exploration.

The collaborative efforts are ongoing and have already proven very successful.  First, cadets enjoyed a movie night hosted by Mr. Ken Winans, Space Museum Coordinator, that began the collaborative relationship.  The BBCA graciously purchased dinner for the cadet movie night at the museum.  Second, the cadets assisted the space museum run their "Space Day" that was held to honor the anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.  Third, the cadets were given the opportunity to participate in the Novato 4th of July parade with the space museum float and meet retired Colonel Yvonne Cagle.  Colonel Cagle is a NASA astronaut and graduate of the Novato High School JROTC program.  In the future, the space museum plans on participating in the Annual Vets and Cadets fundraiser dinner hosted by the BBCA to honor local veterans and raise funds for the cadet program.  Vets and Cadets will be held on Thursday, November 14th at Marin Catholic High School.  Tickets can be purchased at buildingbettercitizens.org.
