Chickens to coop, not soup

NBC News and Patch recently reported about chickens being surrendered to animal shelters across the nation.

On the other hand, in our community, we have a bird of a different feather.

We have not seen an increase in people surrendering chickens in Marin. In fact, many chickens are still being adopted through the Marin Humane Society (MHS).

For the last 5 years or so, we have experienced an increased interest to have chickens as family pets.

The interest is such that MHS regularly works with farm animal rescue groups like Animal Place in Grass Valley to move spent factory hens to backyard coops rather than soups.

Animal Place has relationships with California egg producers to rescue thousands of spent hens from slaughter and in turn, MHS brings hundreds of those hens to our Novato shelter where they are adopted locally.

It is common for families to visit our barn seeking a new feathered friend and then go home with two or four or more hens. These hens live as family pets providing companionship and fresh eggs for the lucky household.

So far this year, MHS has adopted 87 chickens to new loving homes. And, we currently have 18 hens available for adoption. The adoption fee is only $10.

The adoption center is located at 171 Bel Marin Keys Blvd., Novato and is open Tuesday – Sunday, 10:30 – 5:00, and Wednesday until 6:30.

We look forward to being a go to resource for all of your animal interests.
