Mark Brown, who has served as interim deputy chief of the Marin County Fire Department since April 2012, had the word “interim” removed from his title May 13 when he was appointed to the full-time position by Fire Chief Jason Weber.
Brown, recipient of several prestigious firefighting awards, was hired by the Marin County Fire Department in 1991 as a firefighter/paramedic. He served as a fire captain, senior fire captain and battalion chief prior to being appointed as the interim deputy chief last year. The deputy chief vacancy was created when Weber was hired as Fire Chief to replace the retired Ken Massucco. Brown’s base salary in his first year as deputy chief will be $159,557.
Brown was a founding member of the Marin County Urban Search and Rescue Team, California Regional Task Force 1 and has functioned as a rescue squad leader, rescue manager and water rescue team manager. He is currently the task force leader for Urban Search and Rescue.
Brown started his career as a volunteer firefighter in 1986 with the Kenwood Fire Protection District in Sonoma County. He became a firefighter after earning a bachelor’s degree in Applied Studies with an emphasis in organizational leadership from Brandman University, part of the Chapman University system.
Brown is also a Type I Operations Section Chief on CAL FIRE Incident Management Team 4 and one of the incident commanders for the North Bay Incident Management Team. Additionally, he serves as chair of the FIRESCOPE Urban Search & Rescue Specialist Group and is a certified California Fire Officer.
He and his wife live in Santa Rosa and have three teenage boys.
