County Makes Progress on Road and Trail Plan

Staff of the Marin County Open Space District will discuss proposed changes to its Draft Road and Trail Management Plan at a meeting of the Marin County Parks and Open Space Commission on Thursday, Jan. 23.

The meeting continues a thorough public outreach process for the plan, which creates a decision-making framework for an imperfect trail system. Since 2010, nearly a dozen public meetings have been held about road and trail safety, improving visitor experiences, establishing a sustainable system of roads and trails, and reducing the environmental impact on sensitive resources, habitats, riparian areas and special-status plant and animal species.

The meeting starts at 2:30 p.m. Jan. 23 in the Marin County Civic Center’s Planning Chambers, Suite 328, 3501 Civic Center Drive, San Rafael.

According to District General Manager Linda Dahl, staff members are clarifying the plan’s proposals and responding to public questions and comments received since the plan’s release on Oct. 1, 2013.

“Public involvement in this process has been tremendous,” Dahl said. “Over the course of 10 public meetings and workshops, we gathered valuable public input bit by bit, and we incorporated community preferences. The Jan. 23 meeting is a continuation our efforts to respond to questions and public feedback.”

The Final Draft Road and Trail Management Plan, along with its companion Final Draft Tiered Program Environmental Impact Report, will be released concurrently in spring 2014 and presented to the Marin County Open Space District Board of Directors.
