Green Job Training for Unemployed in Novato

The Marin Employment Connection is offering job training in the green buliding industry.

Folks who are unemployed in Novato can take advantage of a new opportunity to gain job skills in the green industry, which may lead to future employment.

The Marin Employment Connection, the county’s employment assistance program operated by the county Department of Health and Human Services, recently received a $399,000 grant to provide training and certifications in the green economy.

“This training program provides 100 unemployed, underemployed, or incumbent workers with vocational training,” said Racy Ming, program manager for the Marin Employment Connection. “We have filled 35 training spots already, and so we have 65 to go.”

Project GREEN will address six targeted sectors, including green building (upgrades and retrofits), renewable energy (solar photovoltaic design, installation and
sales), clean transportation (clean vehicle technology), water and waste water,
energy efficiency and green business services, Ming said.

Klif Knoles, executive director of Marin Builders Association, praised Project GREEN, and noted, “As more tradesmen are trained in green building principles and techniques, there are more skilled candidates to pull from when a new hire opportunity occurs in our businesses.”

Casey Mazzoni, legislative analyst for Marin Builders Association, said that jobs are available in the green building industry.

“Marin and Sonoma counties are leading the charge with green building in the state,” she said. “In Marin County, we probably have the strictest green building standards in the state. This creates more opportunity for green building and jobs for those who are qualified.”

In addition, Mazzoni said, contractors in Marin support the trend in green building. “They want to do what’s best for their customers and the environment.”

Project GREEN targets unemployed, underemployed, and incumbent workers, who want jobs in the growing green economy, Ming said. Green business sectors include energy efficiency, water efficiency, renewable energy, and alternative and renewable transportation technologies, she said.

“We encourage people from Novato to come to our office and apply for this valuable project, “Ming said. “We’re offering several services, including environmental literacy and conservation, math remediation, job-search help, and support. Technical trainings will also be offered inaccordance with each participant’s background, skills, and experience.”

Those interested can attend one of the upcoming Project GREEN information sessions. Session dates and times are online at www.MarinEmployment.org. The next open training session is Thursday, Dec. 29, from 8:30-10 a.m. Information is also available by calling 473-3300. Registration is required.
