How to catch when you are being overcharged

1.  Keep a running total of what you intend to buy, either in your head or write it down.

2.  With sales tax nearing 10%, just add 10% of the taxable items, and your total should be a little less.  Even if (when) sales tax goes over 10%, just add 10% and your total should be a little more.

3. Always check your receipts, no matter what.  Either before you leave the store or once you get home.

4.  If tax is being overcharged, contacting your local Weights & Measures Department will generally get it corrected pretty quickly.  For Marin http://www.marincounty.org/depts/ag/contact-us
