Take a Walk in your Neighborhood. The Results Will Surprise You.

Before you know it, you will know your neighbors and they will know you.

I spend about a fourth of my time in Hungary.  I have a home in a small village called Biatorbagy. (Find it on GoogleEarth.)

There is a  sort of tradition in our neighborhood. Around 6 or 7 p.m., people start to emerge from their homes. It's sort of like when the Munchkins first come out from hiding in the Wizard of Oz.

In Biatorbagy, shortly after dinner, everyone is in the streets.  Their kids come out and so do their dogs.  Everyone starts to just sort of walk around the block.

I love doing this.  First of all, an evening walk after dinner does something to help settle the meal.  But best of all, we get to know each other.  No one is in a hurry to go anywhere.  We just walk slowly and, when we come across someone, we stop and visit.

I think this is something we should all do.  I recommend that after you eat dinner tonight, you go for a walk in your neighborhood.  Do this every night at the same time.  People will see your routine and begin one of their own.  Before you know it, you will know your neighbors and they will know you.

I sometimes think about this Israeli/Palestinian thing.  Maybe instead of having a truce that lasts for a few hours or weeks; they have a nightly truce.  Every night, just after dinner, they walk among each other and visit.  They will come to know each other as neighbors instead of enemies.

Problem solved.

As for now, I have a world to save.

Up, up and away ...
